February 28, 1958 — David Wilkerson lifts his Bible in a New York City courthouse hallway after being ordered out of the trial of seven teenage gang members. The photograph ran in the New York Daily News the next day — and helped open the door to the ministry that became Teen Challenge.

Teen Challenge began in 1958, when a young pastor named David Wilkerson left his country pulpit for the streets of New York City to reach teenagers in gangs that most people had written off. That outreach grew into Adult & Teen Challenge, a network of Christ-centered programs across the United States and around the world, serving adults and young people facing addiction and other life-controlling challenges.

Heartland Boys Academy

Heartland Boys Academy is part of that family—a structured, faith-based residential program for boys ages 12–17 who are struggling with behavior, emotional challenges, family conflict, or destructive patterns. Students live on campus with staff, attend a fully accredited academy, and follow a daily rhythm where academics, counseling, mentoring, spiritual guidance, and everyday responsibilities work together. The program is designed to address root causes, not just symptoms, and families are walked with from the first call through the return home.

12–15 month program
Real change takes time, so the program runs a minimum of twelve months, with some students staying up to fifteen.
Accredited academics
Students attend a fully licensed academy with coursework individualized to their level, so they keep making progress—dual enrollment may be available for advanced students.
Daily mentorship
One-on-one support and daily accountability with experienced mentors through the PSNL (Personal Studies for New Life in Christ) framework.
Christian counseling
One-on-one counseling, group mentoring, outdoor activities, team challenges, and community meals—a clinically informed approach rooted in faith.
Family reintegration
Staff work with each family on a long-term care plan before a student leaves, with continued support available through Hope Counseling.

Three pathways

Each young man arrives with his own story. Some are working through family conflict, anger, or destructive patterns; others simply need structure and a fresh start. They are teenagers—funny, guarded, talented, and worth knowing—and Heartland gives them room to grow.

An Invitation

Help change the story.

As a U.S. Missionary, my ministry is funded entirely by people and churches who give through Assemblies of God U.S. Missions. Monthly partnership is what keeps me on campus — the chapel nights, the guitar lessons, the hard conversations, and the mentoring that continues long after graduation.
